Canon’s final New Cosmos of Photography competition 2021 opens for entries

London, UK – 17 March 2021 – Canon, world-leader in imaging solutions, today announced that entries for its New Cosmos of Photography 2021 photo competition are now open. Having reached its three-decade anniversary, the competition will be held for the 44ᵗʰ and final time this year. The competition is open to international entrants in the aim of discovering, nurturing, and supporting developing photographers who want to explore new and creative ways to engage with photography and video.

Experts from around the world have been invited to judge this year’s competition, including, Japanese art critic Noi Sawaragi and Japanese photographer critic Minoru Shimizu. The Excellence Award Selection Committee will meet in June to choose seven Excellence Award winners and 14 Honorable Mention Award winners, before a Grand Prize winner is selected in November.


Since its launch in 1991, the New Cosmos of Photography contest has accepted 33,359 entries from both individuals and groups, many of whom have gone on to receive international success through their work.


The Grand Prize winner of this year’s competition will receive JPY 1 million in prize money (approx. 7,700 euros) and a Canon product. The winner will also have the opportunity to host an individual exhibit in 2022. To encourage the continued pursuit of their creative activities, 2021 Excellence Award and Honorable Mention Award winners will also receive prize money and the chance to display their works an exhibition of winning entries to be held in 2022.


Those wishing to enter the competition can do so by submitting original photography by post and online, either as an individual or as a group. Entries are open until 31st May and winners will be contacted directly at the end of July.
