Prime Lenses FAQ

Canon prime lenses offer fantastic quality, with lenses available across genres from sports and wildlife to portraits and macro. Get your questions answered below.

  • What is a prime lens?

A prime lens has a fixed focal length. This makes them more compact and lightweight. A wide aperture lets in more light for low light conditions and offering better control over depth of field.

  • Are prime lenses better than zoom?

It comes down to preference. While telephoto lenses are more versatile, primes are more compact, tend to have a wider aperture, are better in low light and have sharper image quality.

  • What is a prime lens used for?

Prime lenses do not zoom, allowing a simpler design with a wider aperture, letting in more light and allowing control over depth of field. They are great for portraits, landscapes, street, action and more. Read more.

  • Why use prime lenses over zoom?

Zoom lenses let you change the focal length, primes do not. With a wide aperture they're great for low light and shallow depth of field. High image quality in a small size is great for pros. Learn more.
